EXAMPLE OF ACTIVITIES

  1. Establish a library and data base on best practices in civic engagement.
  2. Create and maintain a Web site on civic engagement concepts and practices, and advertise the Center’s services.
  3. Provide services to local governments, regional organizations, and companies interested in tapping public opinion:
    1. Assist in organizing public meetings.
    2. Facilitate public discussion groups:
      1. Determine issues.
      2. Select priorities.
      3. Design problem solutions.
    3. Counsel on preparation of objective public opinion surveys.
    4. Share data on civic engagement best practices.
    5. Publicize information on civics conferences offered elsewhere in the country.
    6. Provide referrals to consultants and other professionals with relevant skills.
  4. Organize conferences, town meetings, and symposia on regional or local issues:
    1. Initiate own events.
    2. Seek joint sponsorships with:
      1. Individual universities
      2. Chambers of commerce
      3. Hampton Roads Partnership
      4. Individual local governments, or groups of governments
      5. City business organizations (Greater Norfolk, Portsmouth Partnership,
        Virginia Beach Vision, Greater Peninsula Now, etc.)
  5. Lecture (and publish) on civic engagement concepts and practices to:
    1. Schools
    2. Universities
    3. Business organizations
    4. Local governments and agencies
